Investigators found a plastic bag and a twist tie in the stomach of a Fountain County, Ind., Jail inmate who died in custody Friday. Indiana State Police Detective Blaine Butler said the opened bag found during an autopsy Saturday is believed to have contained illegal drugs. Its possible contents, if any, cannot be determined, pending toxicology reports, which will not be returned for several weeks, Butler said. Fountain County Sheriff's deputies and Covington Police on Friday arrested Antowan Von Reed, 40, Danville, Ill., on a Fountain County warrant for dealing cocaine. "During the traffic stop, he was complacent," Butler said. "He did everything officers asked him to do." Butler and Fountain County Sheriff Robert Bass believe Von Reed had a bag that contained an illegal substance when police began following his vehicle for about four miles. Butler said Von Reed knew police were in pursuit and probably swallowed the bag to avoid its detection. Von Reed became "agitated and extremely vocal," after being placed in the cell, Butler said. He collapsed and police performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him until emergency medical help arrived, Bass said. "In my opinion, they did all the right things," Butler said. "There was no wrongdoing on their (police) part whatsoever. Once they figured out he had a problem, they performed CPR." Von Reed was pronounced dead in St. Vincent Hospital, Williamsport. Bass was concerned for the well-being of his staff, especially newer members, who participated in Von Reed's incarceration, but said, "I think they did everything right, 100 percent ... It's a decision he (Von Reed) made. He could have asked for help any time." |
