KCCI Investigation shows majority of Iowa inmates have mental illness |

DES MOINES, Iowa — A KCCI Investigation finds the majority of inmates in Iowa prisons have a mental illness. Across all nine Iowa institutions, 63 percent of individuals incarcerated have a mental illness. In the women's prison, it's 80 percent. Dr. Beth Skinner, the director of the Iowa Department of Corrections, says some of the most common diagnosis are biopolar disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse.
