A St. Louis-based company serving 300 prisons nationwide is the Indiana Department of Correction's choice to take over health care services at 31 state prisons. That contract had been held by Brentwood, Tennessee-based Prison Health Services for eight years. Department spokeswoman Java Ahmed says the agency currently is talking to Correctional Medical Services Incorporated but they have not yet agreed on a contract. The department houses approximately 21-thousand male and female, adult and juvenile state prisoners. Correctional Medical would take over for Tennessee-based Prison Health Services. It became the first private health care provider selected by the Department of Correction in 1997 and it was awarded a second four-year contract in 2001. It claims to have saved the state more than 62 (m) million dollars in health care costs over eight years. Its current contract expires August 31st and is worth about 35 (m) million dollars per year. |
