In prison, a story of hope and connection

State corrections experts say a pilot project, that trains select inmates to help coach fellow inmates behind bars is paying significant dividends and improving the environment in Vermont prisons.

So far, about 27 inmates have been hired by the Department of Corrections to be inmate-coaches through a program dubbed Open Ears.

Coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are serving time for burglary or selling drugs, while others were convicted of murder.

Each applied to the department to be selected a coach. The position earns them a daily wage of $7. They have all completed a month of training.
