An inmate is accused of killing his cellmate by strangling the man and stomping on his throat at the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in Milton.
Jimmy Ray Carruthers, 42, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his former cellmate, 78-year-old David Kever, according to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement warrant affidavit.
Kever was found unresponsive in the cell he shared with Carruthers at 12:01 a.m. July 1, and an investigation was immediately launched.
Florida Department of Corrections records show that Carruthers had been incarcerated since 1994, when he was convicted of multiple counts of sexual battery on a person younger than 12 years old and additional charges of child abuse.
