James Russell Tramel has gone from killer to priest in his nearly 20 years in prison. The 37-year-old inmate was ordained an Episcopal priest recently in a ceremony at California State Prison, Solano. Church officials say the event was the first of its kind at a California prison and possibly the first in the country. Tramel was convicted in 1986 in Santa Barbara of killing a homeless man. He and a co-defendant were given sentences of 15 years to life for second-degree murder. Tramel began counseling dying inmates while in prison, and he earned a master's degree in theological studies. |
