| Seminole County Correctional Supervisor Stands Out |

Coreatha Jones left the Seminole County School Board after over a decade of working there to enter the corrections field, where she would have an opportunity to build a career and climb up the ladder. Eleven years later, the administrative sergeant has been promoted once and has her eye on rising even higher through the ranks to become a lieutenant. Recently, the American Jail Association recognized Jones for her accomplishments as a supervisor at its annual conference. She said that receiving the Correctional Supervisor of the Year Award was one the best things to ever happen to her. Last week, she talked with The Corrections Connection Network News about her AJA honor and her position in Seminole County. Q: How did you become involved in the corrections field? Jones: I actually started off in the school system, [working for] the Seminole County School Board as instructors' assistant working with mentally handicapped kids. After 11 years, I was ready for a career change and I had a brother that was working in corrections. I wanted to be a police officer, but after having my kids, I decided to go into corrections because I felt it was safer. I researched it and liked what I saw. I made my mind up to go into corrections. I actually started with the sheriff's office June 7, 1994. I started off as a corrections officer just working the floor, working the housing units and working the control rooms in different areas of the jail. After about eight years, I was promoted to correctional sergeant. As a correctional sergeant, I was appointed by the sheriff to be a security sergeant, overseeing the day-to-day function of the inmates, making sure everything was done according to policy and procedure. Then I was promoted from there to [my current position as] administrative sergeant [in support services]. Q: What are some of your duties as an administrative sergeant? Jones: As an administrative sergeant in support services, I [oversee] the transportation unit of the Seminole County Jail. I actually supervise 26 individuals, both civilians and deputies. I supervise the daily running of the inmates to and from court. I supervise getting inmates throughout the United States to the Seminole County Jail. I also am responsible for any outside details where I have to send inmates out into the public. They help do volunteer work [and] I supervise that. I work with what we call high-risk inmates. These are inmates with disciplinary problems. I supervise those inmates on their daily showers, recreation - whatever those inmates need throughout the day. Q: What do you like best about your job? Jones: What I like best is just working with the people. I love working with my deputies. I love working with the public. I do come into contact with the public in a day-to-day basis when I am in the court system, when I am [giving tours of] the facility. We also conduct tours for the courts for any kids that have been acting out and have been court ordered to come into the facility. We conduct attention-getters for those kids to deter them from having any other contact with law enforcement. We try to give them a "scared straight" tour. [But] what keeps me waking up every morning and coming to work is that I have a very good team of deputies. They are very outgoing and, without them, I don't think I would enjoy what I do because they are the ones that keep me going. Q: What are some of the challenges of your job? Jones: I really enjoy what I do, [but] what I do every day is a challenge because, every day, there is something different. Every day I come to work, I might have something different to do. It may be a court problem [or] it may be an inmate. It may be that I have to sit down for a minute and [just] talk to [an inmate] sometimes. One of the challenges is listening. You've got to be able to listen to be a corrections officer and to understand the [inmates'] underlying problems. Q: What do you do in your spare time? Jones: When I am not working, I am active in my church. I am a choir director in my church and then I am the usher board president. Then I just have my family. I am a mother and a wife. I have three children; they are all adults. Q: What does the AJA award mean to you? Jones: My lieutenant put my name in for the award. [Just the] nomination would have been great, but after being chosen, it was the most magnificent thing that ever happened to me. It was exciting. I enjoyed the people that I met [at the conference where I received the award]. I enjoyed the classes that we went to. Everyone was very professional. [The award] is something that I hold dearly. I like what I do and I just do my job. My lieutenant always tells me I do a good job, but when I come to work every day, I come to give my job 100 percent. Within the day, if somebody happens to praise me, I am thankful, but I am here to do a job, I am not here to receive awards. But, if I happen to get that along my journey, that is OK. It means a lot to me, but [I know] I need to do what I need to do in the facility. What I do in here comes first. If it's good for the sheriff's office, then it's good for me. Q: What advice do you have for others working in the field? Jones: Enjoy what you do. Be consistent in what you do. Be fair and be firm. Q: What are your plans for the future? Jones: Well, right now in the near future, I do plan to take what we call our lieutenant's exam. I am hoping, one day before I retire, to become a lieutenant. I would like to excel higher in the field of corrections. So right now, that is [my plan for] the near future and, maybe, in another five years, when I retire, what I plan to do is become a foster mom. |
