Authorities hunt for Cook County Jail escapee |

Authorities fanned out across Chicago's Southwest Side and beyond Monday, looking for a 37-year-old inmate who escaped from the Cook County Jail -- the first jailbreak in 10 years. Randy Rencher, who listed Madison, Ill., among his many home addresses, failed to return from his meal-delivery duties inside the jail between noon and 1 p.m. When he didn't return to his cell or turn up during a "top to bottom" search of the complex at 2600 S. California, authorities decided he had escaped, said Bill Cunningham, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Department, which oversees the facility. Cunningham said there was a possibility Rencher had broken into an officer's locker and stolen a uniform to make his escape. He remained at large late Monday. The sheriff's apprehension team -- which includes search dogs -- along with Chicago Police are part of the effort to find Rencher. That will likely include stops at some of his Chicago residences. Authorities are questioning jail staff and Rencher's fellow inmates, as well as checking whether video cameras captured the escape. A countywide all points bulletin was issued for him. It was unclear whether Rencher had help breaking out. Rencher was jailed last November on weapon and drug charges, but last week a home invasion charge stemming from an incident in Chicago was added to the list. He was held on a bond totaling $600,000 and was awaiting trial in all three cases, Cunningham said. |
