| Juvenile escapes detention facility |

A 15-year-old youth escaped from Bradley County's (Tenn.) juvenile detention center early Monday morning, but is now back in custody. The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. when the youth threatened two staff members with a piece of wood he had shaped into a weapon, said officials. A male corrections officer said the youth attempted to stab him and a female officer before fleeing to a fenced area outside the facility. There he scaled a 12-foot high fence and was last seen running toward the county's new juvenile center that is scheduled to open later this year. Sheriff's deputies, who responded to help look for the youth, learned he had crafted a knife-shaped piece of wood from the wood wall trim inside his cell. Neither officer was injured by the youth. Firefighters at Cleveland's main fire hall near downtown spotted the youth in a vehicle behind their station just after 8 a.m. They called 9-1-1 and several Cleveland police officers arrived within minutes to take the youth into custody. He was treated at a hospital for cuts he apparently incurred scaling the security fence that is topped with razor wire. A report said the youth faces additional charges of aggravated assault, escape from custody, vandalism and theft under $500. |
