Authorities are investigating whether a man may have robbed a bank Monday shortly after escaping from the Cook County (Ill.) Jail. The FBI released surveillance video of the robbery at the First American Bank at 50 E. Adams St. showing someone robbing the bank in a police uniform. Police said the robber took $2,500 cash from the bank after he said to a teller, "I am not a police officer, give me all your money or I'll kill you." The robber then calmly walked out of the bank. Police said he claimed to have a weapon, but didn't display one. Officials believe Rencher robbed the bank at about 2:15 p.m. after escaping from the jail undetected between noon and 2 p.m. Rencher, who was being held on a $600,000 bond on drug, weapons and home invasion charges, was delivering meals through the tunnel system when he escaped, Cook County sheriff's police spokesman Bill Cunningham said. During the deliveries, he stole a correctional officer's uniform from a locker in Division 6, a medium-security wing where he was being held, and then got out of the building, Cunningham said. Corrections officers conducted a "top to bottom search" of the jail and cells when Rencher didn't return from his lunch delivery, Cunningham said. He had been assigned to make meal deliveries as part of an inmate work program for good behavior, according to Cunningham. Inmates are not always supervised while performing such work, Cunningham said. Authorities were still trying to determine how Rencher made his way from the jail to downtown, Cunningham said. The U.S. Marshals office was also taking part in the search, checking out some of his former residences and other homes on the South Side and in the south suburbs as well as in Indiana, said John Ambrose, supervising inspector for the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. The escapee was jailed on Nov. 4, 2004 on one count of unlawful use of a weapon and one count of drug possession, Cunningham said. An additional charge of home invasion filed against him last week raised his bond from $100,000 to $600,000, he said. Monday's escape was the first in 10 years, according to Cunningham. |
