A 16-year-old boy with a heart defect collapsed while jogging at a state-run youth detention center in Englewood on Wednesday and died, a day before he was to be released, authorities said. The name of the boy, who had an enlarged heart, was not released. He had just completed stretching exercises and was running slowly around an outdoor track at the Marvin Foote Center when he fell suddenly, said Liz McDonough, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Human Services, which oversees the detention center. Staff members called medical personnel, who attempted CPR, McDonough said. The boy was revived briefly, she said. He was pronounced dead at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree. His family was called and arrived at the hospital shortly after he died. The Division of Youth Corrections will investigate the death, McDonough said. The boy was serving a seven-day court-ordered sentence for violating conditions of his probation. McDonough said he had committed a nonviolent property crime. He was scheduled to be released Thursday. "Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy today are with the young man's family," said Marva Livingston Hammons, executive director of the state Human Services Department. The Marvin Foote Center, at 13500 E. Fremont Place, opened in 1997 and has 108 beds, including 20 for girls, McDonough said. |
