A man who was beaten by a cellmate in the Multnomah County (Ore.) jail died Wednesday, authorities said. Dennis J. Saban, 43, of Portland was pronounced dead at OSHU Hospital shortly before 6 p.m. Saban, who was being held on drug possession charges, was beaten June 16 by Thomas Allen "Tommy" Gordon, a transfer inmate from Washington. Gordon, 22, was convicted of murder in Clark County and had been brought to Oregon to stand trial in the 2001 death of Vernon Ralph Moranville, 38, of Portland. Gordon was housed in a transitional cell in the detention center in downtown Portland until authorities read a story about him in The Oregonian. The article quoted a Clark County judge who said he was convinced Gordon was prone to violent outbursts. Jail authorities transferred Gordon to solitary confinement. After 15 days without incident, he was moved to a cell with Saban on June 15. The assault happened the next morning, officials said. Gordon is likely to face charges of aggravated murder, said Norm Frink, Multnomah County chief deputy district attorney. |
