SOLANO COUNTY – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), in collaboration with several other Northern California state and local entities, today announced the cancellation of a joint training and controlled burn exercise near CMF and SOL due to unfavorable weather conditions. The 1000-acre controlled burn was originally scheduled to occur from June 15 through June 20 on the rolling hillsides directly behind CMF and SOL. State and local fire agencies conducted a portion of the burn on June 15 and are looking into the possibility of resuming the exercise at a later date. The project was planned to mitigate a wildland fire hazard adjacent to the two state institutions and thousands of local homes in the area, creating a firebreak and lessening the threat of potential wildfire by 95 percent. Prescribed burns are a major part of the California ecosystem to eliminate the build-up of hazardous fuel conditions that threaten homes, resources and wildlife. Re-introducing fire to the landscape not only provides fire-safe neighborhoods, but also helps return native plant and wildlife species to their natural environment |
