A man who had been detained at the Kershaw County (S.C.) Detention Center died at a Columbia hospital June 19, according to Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers. Fellers said Ronnie D. Montgomery, 37, of Campbell Street in Camden, collapsed at the jail before 10 p.m. June 14. ``It appears that, after looking at some of the medical records, the man died of a cerebral hemorrhage,`` said Fellers. He said Montgomery had a pre-existing medical condition but could not conclusively say that condition caused the fatal stroke. The coroner said Montgomery was first transported to Kershaw County Medical Center, then airlifted the same night to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital where he died. Fellers said KCDC Administrator Flora Brooks-Boyd told him the man was released from the jail`s custody the day after he was taken to the hospital, indicating the man was no longer considered an inmate when he died. When asked if his office was investigating the death, Kershaw County Sheriff Steve McCaskill referred all questions to Boyd or County Administrator Bobby Boland. |
