A jail inmate who was on a work crew found a stockpile of loaded guns in an overgrown lot.
But instead of using them for an escape attempt, Joseph Fulwood, 46, reported the find to the work crew's supervisor.
Fulwood was part of a work crew clearing a vacant lot last Monday when he found a white plastic bag containing the weapons in a panel of an old car, according to a Richmond County (Ga.) Sheriff's Office report. The weapons included a handgun, a rifle and five shotguns.
One of the guns, a 12-gauge pump shotgun, was reported stolen last December, the report said.
Fulwood is serving time in the Richmond County jail Correctional Institution for a parole violation, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He had been convicted for sale and distribution of marijuana in Chatham County.
He could be paroled as early as next month.
Fulwood also served 18 months in the mid-1990s for sale and distribution of cocaine in Bryan County.
