A former juvenile probation officer facing trial for allegedly sexually abusing boys in his care got beaten up last Wednesday by another inmate on a jail bus headed for the Multnomah County (Ore.) Courthouse. Michael Lee Boyles, 49, received minor injuries, but the scuffle came in the middle of jury selection for his trial and Circuit Court Judge Michael Marcus decided to suspend juror questioning for the day. The fight broke out about 6:30 a.m., said Lt. Michael Shults, public information officer for the sheriff's office. The bus carrying Boyles and about 35 other inmates, who customarily were all chained together at the wrist, had just pulled away from the Inverness Jail when, "The deputies heard some commotion in the back, and two inmates were fighting," Shults said. Deputies separated Boyles and an inmate who Shults identified as Brian Neil Wiggins, 31. The bus then turned around and went back to Inverness Jail, Shults said. Boyles had been punched in the head and suffered an injury to an eye, Shults said. Boyles was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center for an examination by the jail doctor, who then sent Boyles to Adventist Medical Center for a second look. "They deemed that he was fine," Shults said, and Boyles was taken back to Inverness. Shults said it was not clear how the fight started, who started it or precisely how Boyles was injured. Physically, Boyles was at a disadvantage: He stands 5-foot-5, while Wiggins is 6-foot-1. Shults said the two inmates would be interviewed about the fight and criminal charges are possible. |
