A 19-year-old man who escaped from the minimum-security Minnehaha County (S.D.) Correction Center three weeks ago was apprehended last Tuesday in northern Sioux Falls. Darrell Cornelius Smith was found in the back seat of a car that was stopped by police at West Avenue and Madison Street around 9 p.m. Assistant Sheriff Michelle Boyd said he was located after police received a tip from a citizen. Smith had turned himself in June 9 to begin a 180-day sentence at the work-release center for a drug-possession conviction. Jail staff discovered that a $3,000 warrant had been issued for his arrest for distribution of a controlled substance. Smith didn't have the money to post bond, so he fled, police said. Two days after the escape, a bench with handcuff bars was installed at the Correction Center, Boyd said. Inmates who turn themselves in and can't post bond will be handcuffed to the bench. Smith made his first appearance last Wednesday before Minnehaha County Magistrate Judge Julie Irvine. Bail was set at $5,000 for the distribution charge and $10,000 for the escape. |
