San Quentin warden removed over health care concerns

San Quentin State Prison Warden Jill Brown was removed from her post after the prison system's independent inspector general found that she discouraged her medical staff from cooperating with attorneys in a major inmate health care lawsuit.
A federal judge last week took control of the entire Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation health care system.
He acted four months after medical experts reported that conditions at San Quentin are so appallingly bad that it is dangerous to house new and sick inmates there.
Brown was demoted for chastising the prison's medical director for cooperating with an attorney from the nonprofit Prison Law Office. The office represents inmates in the health care lawsuit.
A prison spokeswoman says Brown isn't commenting.
