An inmate awaiting trial for assaulting a prison officer allegedly attacked and injured a Monterey County (Calif.) sheriff's deputy last Monday. Deputy Humberto Coronado was cut on the throat just below his jaw while escorting Michael Emmanuel Rayford, 27, to an isolation cell of the Monterey County Jail around noon, authorities reported. Coronado was taken to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital for stitches, said jail Capt. Ray McLaughlin. He was released that night. Rayford, who has been in county jail since March, was being led back from the day room for isolation cell inmates, said Cmdr. Fred Garcia. Inmates who are otherwise kept in an isolation cell 23 hours a day are allowed to use the room to shower, exercise or use the phone, Garcia said. Garcia said Rayford hit Coronado in the face, then cut him with a sharpened piece of metal or a razor blade. Another deputy witnessed the fight from an observation tower and called for help. At least four deputies came to Coronado's aid and Rayford was taken back to his isolation cell. Rayford will be charged with assaulting an officer, Garcia said. A news release said Rayford could be charged with attempted murder of a peace officer. Officials said he is a member of a Riverside street gang. |
