A Jefferson County (Ky.) corrections officer accused of firing a double-barreled shotgun into the air during an argument with two men near his home was suspended without pay last week.
Spokeswoman Pam Windsor said the officer, Darrell G. Hance of Lebanon Junction, works in the Jefferson County jail's maintenance department and has been a corrections officer for about seven years.
Earlier yesterday, Hance, 44, pleaded not guilty in Bullitt District Court to charges of wanton endangerment, disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication. His trial is scheduled for July 18.
He was being held in the Bullitt County jail yesterday with a bond of $10,000.
Hance was arrested at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Bullitt County sheriff's department, whose officers were called to Horse Fly Hollow Road on a report of a disorderly drunken man.
While officers were on their way, they were told that a fight had broken out in front of Hance's home in the 2200 block and that shots had been fired, according to the arrest citation.
When officers arrived, Hance and two men were arguing in the street. A witness said Hance had fired the shotgun in the air. No one was hurt, the citation said.
"Mr. Hance admitted to firing the weapon, but not in their direction," it said.
The report also said that Hance smelled of alcohol and that he "stated he had a couple of beers."
Bond was set at $25,000, according to the release.
