Former CO files harassment suit against prison

A former N.H. corrections officer is suing the state Corrections Department, alleging a supervisor sexually harassed her at the men's prison in Concord and the women's prison in Goffstown.
Priscialla DeHotman said a prison sergeant, Douglas Tower, repeatedly asked her out, stood too close to her while making offensive remarks, read her sexual jokes over her protests and once referred to her in derogatory terms at a staff briefing. Tower resigned last month for unrelated reasons.
Pring officials said DeHotman did not report the alleged harassment before she quit, a requirement if the prison is to be held accountable for not responding.
"If things are not reported to the department, they can't address them," Assistant Attorney General Nancy Smith told the Concord Monitor.
DeHotman's lawyer, Michael Sheehan, said DeHotman told several people of the harassment.
In her lawsuit, DeHotman described demeaning behavior at work and raunchy parties after hours.
DeHotman went to work at the women's prison in Goffstown in February 2001, and in the next 13 months, she worked under Tower's supervision in Goffstown and at the men's prison.
According to her lawsuit, DeHotman told several supervisors in Goffstown that she could not work with Tower because he had sexually harassed her in Concord.
A female sergeant allegedly told DeHotman she should try to get reassigned to another shift. The others said, " 'That's the way he is,' that he was stupid and that he had 'the Concord mentality'," according to the lawsuit.
In recent years, at least three prison employees have successfully sued the prison for sexual harassment.
