A jury deliberated more than an hour before convicting a former Lebanon County )Pa.) Prison officer of helping an inmate escape from prison a year ago. Former officer Bonita Kirby was convicted of seven of eight charges last Thursday, including escape and criminal conspiracy to escape. She was acquitted of a misdemeanor count of tampering with evidence. The charges stemmed from the June 2004 escape of Tina Proudfoot Meyerhoffer. Kirby was driving Meyerhoffer to prison, where she was awaiting trial on theft charges, after a medical appointment at the Hershey Medical Center. Meyerhoffer said Kirby handed the keys to her after she told the officer that she was worried about her health and wanted to see her husband. Meyerhoffer was recaptured two days later. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 21. Kirby remains free on bail. |
