A corrections officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Santa Fe, N.M., is behind bars himself, accused of taking illegal kickbacks and fondling one inmate's girlfriend. A criminal complaint says Officer Scott Richter, 50, is accused of receiving $300, gift cards and sports merchandise to change the results of drug tests. He is also accused of providing an "artificial device" to pass drug tests. Richter is also accused of fondling one inmate's girlfriend at her home - a charge of criminal sexual contact. MDC spokesperson Heather Lough says this is an isolated incident and doesn't reflect on other jail employees. "We have zero tolerance when it comes to individuals displaying or engaging in this type of behavior," she said. "We won't accept it, and we will aggressively investigate." The jail says the incidents of bribery didn't happen at the jail, but in the field. Richter worked in the community custody program. He's being held at the MDC - his own jail - under a $100,000 bond. |
