Workers who provide health care to inmates at 23 Illinois state prisons are still on the job, instead of on strike, as the union representing them begins negotiations with a new private contractor. A strike was averted late last Monday when the Illinois Department of Corrections canceled its contract with Wexford Health Sources and hired another company to manage health care at the prisons. ``We're pleased to learn that the sate has acted to remove Wexford,'' said American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 executive director Henry Bayer. Wexford walked away from the bargaining table, he said. The department canceled the contract with Wexford late last Monday, said department spokeswoman Dede Short. Wexford is being replaced temporarily by another firm, Health Professionals Limited, Short said. That company already provides health care in nine other state corrections facilities. |
