Clinton Co. jail inmate dies after assault

A Lansing man has died after a 12-second assault by a fellow inmate at the Clinton County (Mich.) Jail, police said Monday.
Steven Humphrey was confronted by a federal inmate at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday - his 41st birthday - and knocked to the floor, where he hit his head, county sheriff's officials said. He died Sunday at Sparrow Hospital.
The assault happened minutes after Humphrey was moved into the cell in a routine rotation.
The federal inmate, whose name was not released because he hasn't been charged in the case, will remain isolated until the investigation is done.
Ingham Medical Examiner Dean Sienko said he expects to release a cause of death for Humphrey today. Because Humphrey died at Sparrow Hospital, Ingham County handled the autopsy.
Sheriff Wayne Kangas would not say what prompted the assault, which was captured by a camera inside the cell.
Officers saw the fight on a monitor and responded within six seconds, he said.
"I'm confident our officers responded quickly in doing what they're trained to do," Kangas said.
The last time a jail inmate died was in 2001, Kangas said; the inmate had a medical condition.
Kangas said that in his 13 years as sheriff, it is the first time an inmate has died after an assault.
Humphrey, who had been free on bond while awaiting a trial on drug charges, was arrested June 14 because he violated the conditions of his bond, Sheriff's Sgt. Steven Nobis said.
Attempts to contact Humphrey's family Monday were unsuccessful.
