Two prison inmates who were found dead in a Trimble County (Ky.) landfill may have been crushed after being loaded into a garbage truck from a dumpster where investigators believe they were hiding. The bodies of Avery C. Roland, 26, of Stanton, and Michael Talbot Jr., 24, of Louisville, were found Thursday in the Valley View Landfill, a day after the two escaped from the Kentucky State Reformatory in nearby La Grange, Kentucky State Police said. Lisa Lamb, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections, said it is policy for the large garbage truck to compact refuse several times when it is put into the truck at the prison, as an officer watches. As the truck leaves the prison complex, the garbage is compacted one last time in front of the officer at the exit, Lamb said. The undercarriage of the truck is also inspected. "It is done as a security measure," Lamb said. A garbage pickup was made at the prison just before 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday, and garbage from the prison was delivered to the landfill, about 35 miles north of Louisville, that day, Lamb said. The inmates were present for a 5:30 a.m. head count at the prison Wednesday but were reported missing at noon, prison officials said. Kentucky Corrections Commissioner John Rees said he expects the incident will deter future attempts. "I think once the news of this unsuccessful attempted escape gets out across the country, the word will travel fast, and it's not a pleasant ending, but it shows this was an unsuccessful attempt to escape," Rees said Thursday. Kentucky State Police Trooper Greg Larimore said the bodies were turned over to the state medical examiner's office in Louisville to determine the cause of death. A system that would have alerted hundreds of people who live in the area around the prison and who had asked to be notified of escapes failed because of a worker's mistake, Lamb said. The person responsible for activating the call system did not send the message correctly. "It was just a human error in the heat of this event," Lamb said. "It's a definite learning process for us." Roland pleaded guilty last fall to charges of unlawful imprisonment, sexual misconduct and assault in a case involving a University of Kentucky student. A day later he was indicted on charges of rape, sodomy and burglary involving a 2003 case in which a 17-year-old Madison County girl was attacked at gunpoint in her home. Roland was serving four years for the UK attack and was scheduled for a hearing in the Madison County case on July 28. Talbot was imprisoned for wanton endangerment and theft by unlawful taking. He was arrested in 1999 after leading police on a chase from southern Louisville to a cornfield west of Corydon, Ind., and was serving a 10-year sentence. |
