Two punches, two deaths. That's the violent brawling record of Stephen R. Greenlee, a 34-year-old who killed one man in a fight outside a Tennessee strip club in 1998, then killed a fellow inmate with a punch last year in the Virginia Beach City Jail. The Tennessee killing was revealed in court last Monday during Greenlee's sentencing for the Virginia Beach death. Greenlee was sentenced last Monday to six additional months in jail for the latter killing. The new sentence stemmed from an Aug. 27, 2004, incident in the jail. Greenlee killed fellow inmate Glenn Michael Schlomer, 20, with a single punch to the face after an argument over a card game. Schlomer was knocked unconscious by the punch, then hit his head on the concrete floor, according to court papers. Greenlee pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in May. Last Monday, Greenlee said in court that he acted in self-defense, that he feared for his personal safety when he punched Schlomer. "I never intended for any of this to happen," he said. It was the second time he had killed a man with his bare hands. In 1998, Greenlee - whose nickname is "Bigman," according to court records - got into a disagreement with a fellow customer at a strip club in Nashville, Tenn. According to court papers, when the man and a friend jumped Greenlee outside the club, Greenlee punched the man, who later died in the hospital. No further details of the fatal fight were available last Monday. During the fatal jail assault, Greenlee was behind bars on traffic violations, a charge of eluding police and a fugitive warrant from Tennessee, Last Monday, Circuit Judge Edward W. Hanson Jr. sentenced Greenlee to five additional years, suspending all but six months. Greenlee must remain on good behavior for five years upon his release from jail to avoid serving the rest of his sentence, Hanson said. Greenlee's defense attorney, Curtis T. Brown, said his client has already served most of the Virginia Beach sentence and soon will begin serving a two-year sentence in state prison for a probation violation in Norfolk. |
