A parolee who was recently released after spending 21 years in prison for murder was arrested last Monday after police found him hiding in the ceiling of a Dollar General store near downtown Wichita, Kansas.
Wichita police said they're investigating whether the suspect is linked to other recent burglaries in the Delano neighborhood.
Kansas Department of Corrections records show that the suspect, Robin Sanford, 42, was released from the Wichita Work Release Facility on March 1, after being paroled on charges of first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery.
The charges stem from the Jan. 18, 1984, slaying of Joseph Silver, a 72-year-old Topeka fur salesman who was shot three times in his store while working late.
Sanford was convicted after a two-week jury trial.
In Wichita last Monday, Dollar General employees told police they noticed a man enter the store shortly before closing, but didn't see him leave. An employee called 911 at 8:45 p.m., police said, but officers who searched the store were unable to find him.
Police said that around 10 p.m., after the store had closed, a burglary alarm went off. Officers said they returned to the store and found Sanford hiding in the ceiling with a prybar that he had used to try to open a store safe.
Wichita police Lt. Barry Von Fange said that since mid-May, detectives have investigated seven business burglaries in the Delano area. Businesses hit include Strings Attached, Valley Hope, DarLo Shoes and Century Property Management Inc.
Workers at the Dollar General declined to comment.
Department of Corrections records show that Sanford was paroled on March 1, 2005, and ordered to begin reporting to the Wichita Day-Reporting Center on April 8.
The center is intended to provide intense supervision, including electronic monitoring, for parolees who are in danger of being sent back to prison. Parolees are allowed to return to their homes at night, but must spend non-working daytime hours at the center at 703 E. 21st St.
