| Inmates file suit against jail in Campbell County |

A Cincinnati, Ohio, lawyer who has represented several inmates at the Campbell County Detention Center for the fourth time has filed suit against the county, charging that the jail has been unfairly administering collective punishments on inmates. The suit, filed by attorney Robert Newman, said the county and jail unfairly punished six inmates when officers collectively punished 12 inmates when they were unable to determine which one of them knocked over a stack of bowls in the cell's food chute on May 5. Upon inspecting the cell, the officers found several pieces of contraband, including extra sheets, towels, blankets, apples, pens, pencils and a razor handle with a toothbrush attached to it. As punishments, all 12 inmates had their telephone and TV privileges taken away for five days. The suit stated that "being deprived of telephone privileges prevented the plaintiffs from calling their families and lawyers. Being deprived of television privileges cost plaintiffs their principal means of information and entertainment." The suit is seeking nominal damages, attorney fees and the reversal of the end of collective punishments at the jail, which the suit says is a violation of the 14th Amendment. Jailer Greg Buckler and County Administrator Robert Horine said they had not yet been served the suit and did not want to comment. The suit is the fourth filed by Newman against Campbell County. |
