Hayden Jess Dees, the first warden of Louisiana's Dixon Correctional Institute, has died at the age of 83. Dees, who died last Wednesday at his home in Zachary, became an officer at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in 1953 and advanced to the rank of associate warden. He became Dixon's warden in 1975 when the prison at Jackson was opened. In the 1980s, he came out of retirement to serve as warden of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Former Angola warden Ross Maggio called Hayden "an accomplished prison man." "He knew inmates and he knew how to handle inmates," Maggio said. "You don't have too many people around who can do that anymore," Maggio said. A native of Wilmer, Dees was a Navy veteran who served in World War II. He is survived by two sons. A funeral service was scheduled Friday in Zachary. |
