A Hinds County (Miss.) inmate who walked away from a work detail last week has been charged with hitting and killing a man walking in the parking lot of a west Jackson business. Travis Sentell Smith, 20, of Jackson, surrendered deputies last week at his mother's house. He now faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and escape. He was being held last Friday at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond. Smith was among three inmates who escaped last Tuesday from a work detail at Lanier High School. Police say Shawn Wilford, 33, was hit and killed yesterday when a car veered across the westbound lane of the street and hit him. Police say Wilford was dragged several feet before the car hit a retaining wall. Last Wednesday, deputies arrested the other two inmates who left the work detail at Lanier High School. Eugene Palmer, 21, was found at his home. Jerry Jerome Harris, 23, surrendered to deputies. Palmer and Harris both were charged with escape and taken to the jail. Deputies say the three inmates had been held for failing to repay fines owed to the city of Jackson. |
