Authorities searched Monday for a prison inmate who ran away from the Mound Correctional Facility in Detroit, Mich., while he mowed the lawn, a spokesman for the state Corrections Department said.
Lawrence Jones, 36, of Detroit, was part of a work crew from the Macomb Correctional Facility doing yard work at the Mound prison on Monday, Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said.
A prison supervisor noticed Jones as he ran from his lawn mower at about 1:45 p.m., Marlan said. A short time later, corrections officers found Jones' prison clothes, he said.
Marlan said corrections officials do not have any information that Jones had a weapon, but noted that he should not be considered safe.
"I would say that he should be considered dangerous," Marlan said. "He is on the run. He is a prisoner and he is being sought."
Jones' mother and a few siblings live in Detroit, Marlan said.
The Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police and the state Department of Corrections' emergency response team searched for Jones on Monday, Marlan said.
Jones was convicted last summer of possessing crack cocaine in St. Clair County. He had been eligible for parole as early as November 2006, but could end up serving up to 30 years.
He was first in prison in 1994 for a firearms violation and armed robbery, and was convicted in 1998 of possessing marijuana while in prison, Marlan said. Jones was paroled last July, but failed to report to his parole officer, he said.
