A Jennings, La., man facing a murder charge is in even more trouble after kidnapping an Acadia Parish sheriff's deputy and trying to make a getaway in the deputy's car. 21 year-old David Fruge got a taste of freedom, but it didn't last long. Acadia Sheriff Wayne Melancon says Fruge was being escorted out of a Crowley dentist's office Monday around 10:30 a.m. when he overpowered a deputy holding something pointed at the deputy's neck. "We're not sure exactly what he had. Was it some type of instrument? Was it a ball point pen? Was it a pencil? We really don't know and the deputy didn't know," said Melancon. Fruge drove the deputy and another inmate to an area south of Crowley. He took the deputy's shirt, handcuffed him to an irrigation well frame and then took off with the other inmate still in the back of the unit. The deputy freed himself and flagged down a motorist. Within 30 minutes, another deputy spotted Fruge in the stolen car. "He didn't know where he was. He was riding around all over the parish on the country roads. He didn't have any idea where he was going," said Melancon. "There was very little chase, honestly, when they drove upon the car and surrounded the car. He was completely surrounded. He had no choice." Even though Fruge was handcuffed and shackled leaving the doctor's office, he was still able to overtake the deputy, so Sheriff Melancon is ordering changes in the ways inmates are transported. "We have [what] we call a belt. It's a belt that goes around the waste and handcuffs go through the waste. There won't be anybody leaving our center without the belt. Each officer, now, when he picks up an inmate will be given a photograph of that inmate and a copy of his charges so he'll know who he's dealing with and the type of charges he's facing." In addition to the initial murder charge, Fruge is facing additional charges of false imprisonment, armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated escape. Fruge was in jail awaiting trial for the April 2004 stabbing death of Corey Gaspard in Evangeline. The deputy was treated for minor injuries. |
