A female staff member at the state prison in Moose Lake, Minn., was assaulted and injured by an inmate earlier this week, corrections officials said Wednesday. The injuries were "non-life threatening," the Department of Corrections said, but the agency declined to release details about the assault except that it happened at 3:15 p.m. Monday and that the inmate has been transferred to another prison. "We have an investigation under way, so all we're providing while the investigation is under way is a written statement," said Shari Burt, spokeswoman for the department. The Minnesota Correctional Facility at Moose Lake is a medium-security prison and houses 1,030 male inmates. Many of the state's convicted sex offenders are incarcerated there. Overseeing those inmates is a staff of 356, including 136 women, the department said. The assault is being investigated by the Moose Lake Police Department and the corrections department. Police officials did not return a call for comment. Dennis Benson, corrections' deputy commissioner for facility services, said the department refers "significant assaults" to county attorneys for prosecution. The inmate also could face charges under the department's internal disciplinary regulations. |
