Escaped inmate remains at large

Police dogs tracking the scent Wednesday of a convicted drug dealer who escaped the Pitchess Detention Center in Calif. the night before came to a dead end at Interstate 5, at the foot of the jail property, a sheriff's lieutenant said.
The assumption was that somebody was waiting in a car Tuesday night or Wednesday morning for inmate Bairon Perez, 34, who fled the Castaic jail while on duty in the laundry, said Lt. Diane Walker of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station.
"They got a scent, a really good scent," Walker said. "They followed the scent to the freeway at Hasley (Canyon Road) where the scent was lost. That usually means he got a ride."
Perez, who was bound for three years in prison on drug charges, was not considered dangerous, she said. An illegal immigrant, he also was being held for the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Jail officers were alerted about 9 p.m. Tuesday when Perez's ankle bracelet triggered an alert as he escaped the grounds of the sprawling complex, Walker said. Sirens sounded in surrounding neighborhoods of Castaic and Stevenson Ranch and scores of deputies from several stations searched the area, aided by the two dogs.
During the search, deputies found a discarded jail-issue orange jumpsuit.
Perez was arrested April 27 by Los Angeles police in the Newton Division and convicted June 30 of drug trafficking and sales. He was due to be transported Wednesday to state prison.
Tuesday evening he was working with several other inmates in the laundry and apparently hid in the large facility as they returned to their quarters. Perez apparently escaped through the laundry dock, Walker said. A manhunt began about 9:15 p.m. and was called off locally at dawn when the dogs lost the inmate's scent. Detectives have tracked down family members and will continue investigating.
