For little more than an hour and a half of freedom, Kelley G. Bennington could face up to five years in prison. Bennington, an inmate at Mason County (Ky.) Detention Center, escaped from a van that was returning from the Mason County Recycling Center Thursday afternoon, according to Mason County Jailer Bob Tribby. Bennington had been out on a community service assignment prior to adjudication on his charges. Less than two hours after jumping out of the van and escaping, Bennington was located at 426 East Second Street, his home, Tribby said. "(Prisoner escape) is not a phenomenon that's unique to here," Tribby said. "It happens all over the commonwealth." The 21-year-old inmate had been in jail for four days facing misdemeanor charges relating to fourth-degree assault, which is a domestic violence charge, and endangering the welfare of a minor. Tribby said that once a prisoner escapes, the Maysville Police Department is immediately notified and a warrant is sought for his arrest. The charge of second-degree escape is a Class D felony, Tribby said, with a punishment of one to five years in prison. For his misdemeanor charges, Bennington would not have served more than a year, likely less, Tribby said. The rash decision which allowed the prisoner little free time, will weigh a heavy consequence behind bars, he said. "A lot of times, (prisoners) make decisions based on the spur of the moment," Tribby said. "Sometimes that's running away." |
