Law enforcement officers from the Michigan State Police and the state Department of Corrections said last Tuesday they helped catch 201 parolees who were violating conditions of their release from prison during a three-day sweep. The capture of 201 violent parolees late last month was the most taken in the two-year history of the state and local law enforcement partnership known as Project S.A.F.E. Street, for Statewide Apprehension of Fugitives Effort. During the June sweep, a sex offender was arrested in the presence of a minor and authorities confiscated guns, ammunition and drugs, authorities said. Fourteen county sheriff departments, 44 local police departments and two federal agencies worked with state authorities in the June 28-30 sweep. Nearly 1,100 parole violators have been caught in seven sweeps since the program began in March 2003. |
