Attorneys representing corrections officers at the federal penitentiary in Lompoc, Calif. have sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, complaining that prison officials have failed to guarantee employee security. The letter, which criticizes Warden Al Herrera and the federal Bureau of Prisons, follows a Wednesday attack on three officers. It claims that staff shortages have resulted in convicts having the upper hand at the prison and accuses Herrera of failing to punish inmates who harass guards. It was issued by the Administrative Law Group, an Ontario-based law firm representing the officers. Prison officials declined to comment except to say they had not seen the letter. It claims the Bureau of Prisons has failed to address dangerous work conditions at the prison despite warnings by the officers' union, American Federation of Government Employees Local 3048. |
