An inmate formerly housed at the Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone, N.Y., has been transferred to Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Washington County after he allegedly bit and chewed on the fingers and hand of a corrections officer. Officer Tim Conners was delivering a tray of food to inmate Calvin Combo, 45, at 7:30 a.m. and as he placed the tray through a "feed-up" hatch, a small window in the cell door, Combo grabbed the officer's hands, braced his feet against the door and pulled, forcing the officer flat against the cell door. Combo is serving a 4 to 12 year sentenced for second degree burglary. According to the Department of Corrections, his disciplinary record includes five previous assaults on prison staff. He is scheduled for release in September, 2007 on the burglary conviction but faces other charges including department charges of violent conduct, assault on staff, creating a disturbance and refusing a direct order. If he is found guilty on any of those charges, he could face additional prison time and loss of privileges and criminal charges could also be lodged Combo reportedly "gnawed on the right hand quite severely" of the 15-year officer as Conners was pressed against the outside of the cell. A surveillance videotape recorded the incident and showed that the gnawing lasted 20 to 25 seconds. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections said the biting lasted about 10 seconds. Combo's grip on Conners was released when another officer seized Conners by the waist and pulled him away from the door. The officer was treated for injuries to his wrists and right shoulder as well as multiple teeth marks and cuts on his right hand. He was treated and released at a Malone medical facility and is off work on workers compensation. |
