Nine male inmates at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, Calif., suffered minor injuries Monday in a melee that involved 17 people. The fight erupted at 2 p.m. at the minimum-security yard as several hundred inmates gathered for their recreational break, said Department of Correction spokesman Mark Cursi. Cursi said he did not know what sparked the fight, which involved 17 male inmates and lasted about five minutes. He said correctional officers quickly quelled the fracas, and inmates complied with orders to cease fighting. The inmates subsequently were escorted back to the barracks and were being interviewed Monday afternoon to determine what sparked the fight. ``It could be anything,'' Cursi said. ``We don't know if it was group-upon-group, several individual fights or what the underpinnings were.'' No weapons appeared to be involved and none of the inmates required hospitalization. Monday's clash was the second at the minimum-security camp at Elmwood in the past 3 1/2 months. In April, a lunch-hour disturbance between two groups of inmates sent one man to the hospital with a head injury. |
