An inmate at the Johnson County (Ind.) jail was beaten into unconsciousness by another prisoner Tuesday.
The fight happened in cellblock A of the jail about 6:15 p.m., when inmates are allowed to roam between cells before the 11 p.m. nightly lock down.
Inmate Charles Meredith, 31, of Morgantown told jail officers he was sleeping on the top bunk of his cell when another inmate, identified as Christopher West, came into his cell and started beating him, according to police reports.
The 22-year-old Indianapolis man has been in jail since May and is accused of robbing a Greenwood Village Pantry.
Meredith is in jail on charges of failure to appear in court and nonsupport of a child.
Jail officers are not clear on what caused the fight.
Meredith told a detective that he and West had an argument earlier, and West later came back to the cell and reportedly beat him, Detective Bob Sexton said.
Meredith was beaten first on the back of the head then on both the front and back, according to a police report.
He suffered injuries that included swollen eyes and bruises and cuts on his face.
Meredith called for help from jail officers, who were conducting a headcount in another cell block, the report said.
A jail officer took Meredith to a visitation room to get a statement from him, but he passed out minutes later.
The jail nurse saw blood coming from his right ear and called for an ambulance, the report said.
Meredith was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis and returned to the jail at 10:30 p.m., Sexton said.
West was escorted from his cell by jail officers, who carried a stun gun because of the inmate's past outbursts, the report said.
He was being held in isolation from other inmates Wednesday, Emery said.
A disciplinary board plans to meet today to decide if any more sanctions are needed, he said.
The Johnson County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing an additional charge of battery with injury, a class A misdemeanor, against West.
