An inmate at the Lieber Correctional Institution in South Carolina was killed in his cell Tuesday night. The body of Justis Bergenzer, 22, was found in his cell by a sergeant who was locking down the prison's B-wing in the Edisto Unit, according to a news release on the Department of Corrections' Web site. Bergenzer had been stabbed to death, the Web site said. The sergeant found the body after noticing a group of inmates standing outside cell B-23. Bergenzer was serving a one-year sentence for escape and grand larceny. He had escaped from the Wateree River Correctional Institution in August 2002. The State Law Enforcement Division and the state Department of Corrections are investigating Bergenzer's death. |
