Authorities are investigating the death of a 76-year-old inmate at the San Mateo County (Calif.) Jail last Monday evening but suspect he may have died of natural causes. The man, identified by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office as Thad Smith, Jr., was discovered dead in his single cell at the Maguire Correctional Facility just after 6 p.m. by sheriff's deputies, who were doing a count and inspection. At first, Smith appeared to be sleeping, but when deputies were unable to wake him, they pulled back the covers and discovered he wasn't breathing, said San Mateo County Sheriff's Capt. Don O'Keefe. Deputies performed CPR and were soon joined by paramedics and jail medical staff, but they were unable to revive Smith. O'Keefe said there was nothing to indicate Smith committed suicide or that he died under suspicious circumstances. A Coroner's Office spokeswoman said last Tuesday night that the death appeared to be of natural causes but that toxicology tests were pending. She said Smith reportedly had complained of chest pains earlier last Monday. Smith, said to be a transient from Contra Costa County, reportedly was arrested by the San Francisco Police Department's Airport Bureau on July 20 on charges of trespassing and violating a court order. |
