The former director of the Lake County (Ill.) Department of Corrections was indicted last Wednesday along with an ex-employee for an alleged scheme to fraudulently claim hundreds of thousands of dollars in pension benefits. Former director Lawrence Lesza and former deputy director Charles M. DeFilippo were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit theft in excess of $100,000 and one count of attempted theft exceeding $100,000, according to the indictments returned by a Lake County grand jury. The conspiracy to commit theft charge is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison, Attorney General Lisa Madigan said last Wednesday in a statement. The attempted theft charge carries a prison term of up to seven years in prison DeFilippo was also indicted on five felony counts of forgery, and Lesza was also indicted on a single forgery count, punishable by up to five years in prison. Beginning in March 1999, Lesza assisted DeFilippo in allegedly submitting forged documents to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, according to the indictments. Because of information in the documents, the IMRF raised DeFilippo's potential pension by more than $19,000 a year - adding up to more than $344,000, Madigan said. It was not immediately clear whether DeFilippo and Lesza had attorneys. Public telephone listings for both men were not available. Lesza retired as director in 2000 and DeFilippo was promoted to the position. He resigned as director in 2003, Madigan said. |
