Governor To Sign Sex Predator Bill

Published: 08/02/2005

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley visits a state prison in St. Clair County Tuesday where he will sign into law a bill to toughen penalties against sex offenders who prey on children.
Attorney General Troy King says the legislation will give Alabama one of the toughest sex offender laws in the country.
The new law provides a mandatory 10 year sentence for violent sex offenders. It allows judges to sentence sex offenders to wear electronic monitoring ankle bracelets for ten years or longer after they are released from prison. Other provisions include strengthening community notification requirements and requires that a special mark be put on the driver's licenses of sex offenders.
Riley will sign the measure this afternoon at the St. Clair County Correctional Facility in Springville.
