Police in Corvallis, Ore., have announced a "major development" in the missing person case of Brooke Wilberger, a Brigham Young University student who vanished more than a year ago. Police confirmed Tuesday that 38-year-old Joel Patrick Courtney had been charged with aggravated murder in the Wilberger case. Police confirmed Courtney is being held in a New Mexico jail on charges of kidnapping, assault and rape of another female college student - an incident that happened six months after Wilberger disappeared, according to KGW TV station in Corvallis. Lt. Ron Noble of the Corvallis Police Department said the details of the development will be announced at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. today. New Mexico officials and Corvallis police told KGW that Courtney was served with an Oregon arrest warrant at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque. Courtney was described by Albuquerque police officer Trish Ahrensfield as "a bad dude" who has a history of past convictions for rape and sex offenses in other states, according to KGW. Noble said Wilberger has not yet been found. Wilberger was last seen May 24, 2004, in Corvallis, Ore., where she was staying with her sister and brother-in-law and helping clean the apartment complex the couple manages across the road from Oregon State University's Reser Stadium. Corvallis police immediately suspected foul play, as the 19-year-old left her sandals and cleaning supplies in the parking lot where she was working. |
