Iowa Inmates at the state's prison at Coralville will soon be eating their meals in their cells, not the dining hall. In 2007, the Iowa Medical and Classification Center will open a new complex and add room for nearly 200 more inmates. The dining complex will be converted to a serving center where meal trays will be fixed and shipped to individual units. Breakfast has been served in the cells for about ten years because of time restraints. Officials say there's just not enough time between the end of breakfast and the first shift for lunch to prepare that meal. Warden Lowell Brandt says the new set-up will also cut down on the odds of fights breaking out. |
