Saint Landry Parish, La., prison inmates may have to pay for more of their own medical expenses if a proposed parish ordinance is approved later this month. The parish's legal adviser Andrea West says Saint Landry is taking advantage of a 2004 state law that allows parish government to seek some reimbursements from prisoners who require medical treatment. Having prisoners share medical costs is already done in several parishes, and Terrebonne Parish began studying a similar plan last month. West says prisoners often pretend to have an illness to temporarily leave their cells or the jail compound. And some inmates get arrested to have their medical expenses covered by parish government. If passed in Saint Landry, the ordinance would not affect prisoners who are financially unable to pay medical bills. A public hearing is scheduled for August 16th before the parish council takes any action. |
