Two female inmates at North Granville County, N.C. Detention Center escaped early Tuesday morning, but their brief taste of freedom ended about 14 hours later with their capture. The two inmates, Noel Waff, 19, of 418 Fair Cloth St., Raleigh, and Kristen Sky Whitaker, 17, of Georgia, escaped from the jail at 1:30 a.m., within 30 minutes of the last time they were seen. Sheriff David T. Smith said the two women escaped through a fresh-air vent in the cell they shared with the jail's other female detainees. The women then shimmied down a drainage pipe on the wall of the jail to their freedom, he said. The two women were recaptured about 3 miles outside of Oxford on U.S. Highway 15 at 4 p.m. after sheriff's deputies spotted them during a search. Smith said the women, who were wearing civilian clothes, were recaptured without incident. Waff was in jail on charges of possession of stolen goods, burglary and larceny after breaking and entering. She had been in the jail since Thursday. Whitaker was being held on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle. She had been in the jail since July 22. Smith said it was unclear if the women had help from outside the jail. He said both women would be returned to the same cell they escaped from and would face additional charges relating to their escape. "We are going over the jail to make corrective measures," Smith said. "The part they escaped out of was built in 1969. We've had to make modifications to ensure this won't happen again." Smith said this was the first jailbreak in his seven years as sheriff. |
