Authorities are trying to determine how an inmate charged with murdering a police officer obtained hacksaw blades found in his cell at a privately run jail in Florida. Officers and sheriff's deputies, acting on a tip, said they discovered the blades and other evidence of plans by Robert Bailey to cut his way out of a maximum-security cell at the Bay County Jail. It is operated by Corrections Corporation of America. A judge on Tuesday ordered that Bailey, 23, of Milwaukee, be held in "maximum custody." Bailey was jailed without bail on a first-degree murder charge in the March 27 shooting death of Panama City Beach police Sgt. Kevin Kight during a traffic stop. He faces new charges of attempted escape and introduction of contraband to a detention facility. His cell was searched Monday after U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents informed sheriff's deputies they had learned during another investigation that Bailey was planning a jailbreak, said sheriff's Capt. Jimmy Stanford. Seven hacksaw blades were found hidden, investigators said. They also reported finding bolts sliced partway through in metal grates covering windows and cuts in a metal divider between the cell's two windows. Bailey hid the cuts with a mixture of toothpaste and paint chips, Stanford said. "He was probably only a few days from being done," he said. But had Bailey cut through the sixth-floor window, he would have faced the problem of getting safely to the ground. Investigators found nothing such as a stash of sheets, that he could have used to climb down the outside wall. Bailey was not supposed to have direct contact with visitors. Investigators are looking for possible suspicious contacts with other inmates or jail employees. A Corrections Corporation of America spokeswoman referred all questions to the Sheriff's Office. Bailey declined to give investigators a statement, Stanford said. |
